Curl Up on a Good Book

posted 18 Nov 2003, 5AM | 9 Comments

So sometime this morning as I moseyed along Hoover Street toward campus, it hit me that one way or another I didn't get enough sleep last night. I'm not sure how that happened, but it might have had something to do with too much Cowboy Bebop, or too much Simpsons: Hit and Run, or the hash oil, or the book I've been reading.

Anyway, as I approached the Leavey Library, the somewhat regal building that houses my cozy little office, I started thinking about the long hours I once spent in the Boston University Mugar Library. During exam periods the library would go into 24-hour mode, and I'd pull odd, moderately-productive all-nighters there, breaking sporadically to stretch my legs and swill Arizona iced tea.

Sometimes, though, when I started getting really sleepy, I would find me a hiding place in the art history stacks, and I'd take a short nap on the floor with my head resting on a pile of books. If only my office had a nap room, full of colorful carpet squares. Maybe I should just put my head down on my desk.

First, Simpsons hit and run is the finest simpsons video game since that arcade adventure where I would whack burn's henchmen with Bart's skateboard. Second, Ryan I wish to god that my library had a 24 hour mode. How can anyone expect me to get to the library and check out books before midnight when I don't wake up and eat breakfast before 10pm? Real life will be like this. Real life will be like this.

I'm too paranoid to sleep in a library.

Too many creepy things happen in libraries.

Although sleeping under a desk is my favorite spot, bookshelves would do nicely.

How did you make sure of when you'd wake up?

Martha, I don't remember... probably I didn't care, or I kept some sort of a watch timer.

God, it wasn't that long ago, and I'm not that old. I really should remember this. You know, best I can recall, I don't think I really fell asleep; I jsut sort of closed my eyes and zoned out, to refocus. That helped.

Oh, well, that makes sense.

Me, I'd fall asleep and not wake up for NINE HOURS. Which would be bad.
